Taking part of this broadcast were 6,500 people in 21 locations around Sweden for a whole day. The purpose of the consignment was to publicize the situation of children living in families with substance abuse problems and what society can do to improve their situation. Several thousands of students over the years has taken part in the courses and lectures from their own home town, without having to study on campus in Luleå. Now the university makes one more big effort to modernize the educational environment. The goal is to achieve optimal functional solutions for web-based meetings and training with IT support. ComPodium has been contracted to design the technical solution. This is the biggest initiative in Sweden for custom video technology and educational environment for distance learning. The mission is to adapt and equip three classrooms and two auditoriums with the media, technology and support staff and teachers with coaching and training. National surveys show that many distance students, unfortunately, interrupt their studies prematurely. The reasons can be many. An important task for the university is to ensure the best quality in media technology to students at distance education. So they feel cared about at least as much as those who are in the same room as the teacher. This is achieved e.g. by exclusively using electronic interactive slates. All existing black or white slates is thrown out. This gives all students, regardless of location, the exact same experience of the teacher's notes, presentations and artwork. The sound is transmitted with wireless headset microphones and steerable microphones. All sound levels are adjusted automatically. All microphones are fitted with their own powerful echo-canceller to achieve the perfect sound. The rooms are equipped with a bundle of advanced media- and information technology. The main task of the design work is to make usability as easy as possible so that even a guest teacher without special training can manage it and have a lesson over distance. The teacher controls all video and audio technology, lighting, curtains, etc. in the room with a customized touch screen. Many functions are also completely automated, including controlled camera selections and positioning depending on who is currently talking. The teacher has a number of screens on the table that shows all the necessary images to ensure the quality of transmission. Students in the class room has a variety of screens and projection screens in front of them. These screens will showcase images from computers, electronic writing board, pictures from the roof-mounted camera, objects, images from DVD / video player. -This is a big approvement for distance education and makes the University of Technology in Luleå the leading institution in Sweden when it comes to taking care of students at a distance, says project manager Katrin Holmgren The project started in Nov 2005 and is in full operation since August 2006.
